Before joining Birket Engineering, Russell founded and served as Deputy Chairman of Nightfreight Group, Nightfreight plc and its subsidiaries, taking the company to a worldwide presence. Nightfreight included some 2000 personnel, 50 depots, 800 vehicles, and £100M in sales.

Prior to this Russell was General Manager for Kuwait Land Transport, whose transportation, vehicle sales, and freight forwarding divisions were responsible for $50M in sales. Russell has also held executive positions at Barclays Securities, Bechtel Corporation, Rank Xerox, and at Lex Wilkinson, where he was responsible for 2000 employees and $40M in sales.

Russell is a part-time Practicum Supervisor for the MBA Program at Rollins College's Crummer Business School and has ownership in several businesses.
