VIKING ADVENTURE
Wakayama Marina City, Japan
Reprinted from BIRKET Engineering News September/October 1993

The "Viking Adventure" is just one of the exciting attractions at Porto Europa, MID's new entertainment center near Wakayama, Japan. BIRKET Engineering is providing all of the computer controls required of the special effects and safety systems for the 15-minute live-action stunt spectacular.

The show system special effects include large and small water cannons, debris cannons, fish cannons, fog and smoke machines, and over thirty pyrotechnic loads and percussion loads. The show action equipment includes a splitting iceberg, falling balcony, slide-for-life, tilting power poles, sway pole, a falling building facade, and much more. The system provides for intrusion detection and motion sensors in safety-critical areas.

BIRKET Engineering uses an Allen-Bradley 5/30 Programmable Logic Controller for the monitor and control of all effects. The 5/30 communicates to eleven remote Allen-Bradley SLC 500s for a total of 768 input/output points. BIRKET Engineering is responsible for the design, manufacture, and installation of the show and safety system for the attraction.

Porto Europa will also feature a flume ride with a show control system by BIRKET Engineering. Among the many effects are a waterfall and spiraling fog vortex through which guest boats will flow. They will float on a cloud of mist and encounter an on-rushing ball of fire before cascading down a spectacular 65' water slide.
