Birket Engineering developed the original concept for the "E.T. Goodbye" system with Universal Studios Florida project personnel. We then had complete responsibility for the design and implementation of the system. Two years later, the success of the attraction induced Universal Studios to open the attraction in Los Angeles. Birket was again contracted to provide the system with enhancements. After guests at Universal Studios have seen the E.T. preshow, they pass through a room where they are given a "passport." In this room they are greeted by six hosts/hostesses. An inquiry is made of each guest's first name. This name is typed into the terminal and a "passport" is scanned through a bar-code reader. The guest then carries the passport through the line until it is time to board a ride vehicle. While boarding the ride vehicle, another Universal host/hostess collects the passports from each of the passengers and passes them over a window scanner as the vehicle leaves. Birket's goodbye system then identifies the vehicle as it leaves by reading an RF tag mounted to the top of the vehicle. The vehicle now "knows" who is riding the vehicle. A few minutes later as the guests approach the end of the ride, an animated ET character turns to greet the vehicle and speaks to each guest by name.
